![]() It’s been said that if you give a girl the right pair of shoes, she can conquer the world. Give a bride a pair of pretty but totally impractical shoes and she’ll be hobbling about barefoot before the party has even begun. Here at Bridal Musings, we’ve been on the hunt for that elusive combination of a bridal shoe that is not only beautiful to behold but also comfortable. On your wedding day, you deserve to feel confident and we think we may have just found the perfect bridal shoes. Emmy London creates comfortable bridal shoes for brides that tick all our boxes, they’re timeless, chic, and exquisitely beautiful. Think luxurious velvet, silk bows, and ornate embellishment. Plus, they come in an array of colors and heel heights to suit all manner of bridal styles, whether you’re a classic ivory kitten heel kind of bride or are after a statement sky-high heel in powder blue, forest green, or delicate blush. No detail has been left unchecked. The wrapping truly makes unboxing feel like a gift. If the amount of effort and care put into packaging is any indication of the level of dedication during creation, my tootsies are in for a treat. And while my wedding day has come and gone, I can hardly wait to put these heels to the test with as much love and romance as one could muster. We’re cashing in on a date night. ![]() Testing the Harriet style by Emmy London:Right off the bat, it’s impossible to not be a little struck by the quality of materials. The Harriet d'Orsay design is 100% Italian suede with 100% leather lining and sole…and 100% pretty. The stitching is immaculate and the construction of the shoe itself feels as luxurious as it looks. Each pair of comfortable bridal shoes by Emmy London is handmade. The Harriet style features four ways to wear with two straps included – a thin and understated ankle strap and a statement-making sash. Even the single diamond stone in the sole oozes sophistication and splendor. Listen, all this is not to say that the feminine heel is delicate. It feels sturdy, sexy, and supportive. The mid-heel height is ideal for elongating your legs but maintaining a level of comfort that will survive the day from photos, ceremony and into the dancing the night away at the after party. The sizing feels accurate; if anything a little roomy and the edges are smooth with no pinching whatsoever. For review’s sake, I’m getting ready in the shoes to mimic the extended wear of a bridal shoe. Many of us may have a pair of heels that I kindly refer to as ‘dinner shoes’. In that they’re great for walking to your dinner table, sitting and then walking back to the car to go home. They may be pretty but they’re not necessarily built to carry you through one of life’s most important milestones. But not my Harriets…yes, we’re on a first-name basis now. Wink, wink. ![]() Emmy London squashes the connotation that high heels are uncomfortable. As pioneers of comfortable bridal shoes, the brand designs for women, by women. Understanding firsthand how a shoe needs to fit and feel, how it needs to evoke confidence and joy, Emmy herself takes inspiration from the beauty of everyday life to create both ready-to-wear and made-to-order shoes for the most special of occasions. I chose to pair the thin strap with an embellished buckle with dark straight-leg denim and a slim top with a leather jacket overtop. A couple of hours into wear, the padded soles and perfectional proportional heel kept me cozy and eager to find a dance floor. I am happy to report these beautiful and comfortable bridal shoes heightened my confidence throughout the night, photographed wonderfully, and stayed on for the duration of the evening without hesitation. ![]() Shop the Harriet shoeSo, what’s the verdict? Cluster Engagement Ring FAQsWhat are cluster rings?A cluster ring is a name given to a broad range of ring styles but all feature gemstones ‘clustered’ together. According to Abby Sparks of Abby Sparks Jewelry “A cluster setting is when we take a group of stones typically a center stone and then clustering side stones on the left & right. I've seen north and south clusters as well. It’s typically not a symmetrical look, it's a little bit more random, a little bit more whimsical.” Why get a cluster engagement ring?

But you're understandably nervous and wondering if it's the right time. We've explored previously how long you should wait to propose according to research and the experts. But how long do people date before getting married in reality? We genuinely weren't sure, and though there is some existing research, it was slightly dated – so we decided to find out ourselves. How long do people date before getting married, according to our research? We jumped online and asked over 2000 people how long they dated before getting engaged, and these are the results:
![]() Factors to bear in mindNow, there’s a couple of important caveats to bear in mind here when digesting these results. Engagement vs. Marriage The question was posed on social media, and given various social media platforms' limitations, we could only ask one question. Bearing that in mind, we chose to ask how long couples waited before getting engaged rather than married. Why? Because we felt that asking when a couple got married would have skewed the results as people wait considerably different amounts of time engaged before actually tying the knot – that’s for another poll! Whereas asking how long couples waited before getting engaged, at least gave a solid indication of a couple's willingness to get married. Age Due to the one-question limitation, we couldn’t confirm the exact age of the couples who responded. It’s safe to assume that couples who were much younger would have waited longer before getting engaged, whereas older couples might have been less hesitant. Location & Culture Whilst the vast majority of our social media following is US based, we do have followers from overseas and there’s no question, some countries have a shorter dating length time culturally before getting tying the knot. Those caveats aside, we still feel the data gives an accurate depiction of how long couples are waiting nowadays before committing to marriage. How long do people date before getting married, according to existing research? Our research lines up with data from an e-Harmony study in 2018 that found that “American couples aged 25 to 34 knew each other for an average of six and a half years before marrying, compared with an average of five years for all other age groups.” What does the research tell us?Despite the ease of which couples are able to date nowadays thanks to the rise of online dating and apps, when it comes to serious lifelong relationships, the research shows couples are taking their time – and perhaps, rightfully so, according to experts & research on how long couples should wait before getting engaged to reduce the changes of divorce. So, what does this mean for you?If you've taken your time and you’re part of the majority that have waited over three years, or even five, don’t stress. It takes most couples time to decide whether they want to spend the rest of their lives together and there’s nothing wrong with that. Trust us, when you find the right person, you’ll know it and taking your sweet time with your engagement won’t change that. My hubby waited over 10 years! :) via https://bridalmusings.com/191501/how-long-do-people-date-before-getting-married/ ![]() If you’re reading this, it’s safe to assume you’re considering proposing and perhaps relatively early on in your relationship! It's exciting! But you’re also wondering whether the time is right. How soon is too soon to propose? We already know how long couples wait on average before getting married, but what does the research tell us about how long we should date to lower the chances of divorce? How soon is too soon to propose, according to research & dataWell, a study by researchers at Emory University in 2017 surveyed 3370 married or previously-married people and uncovered results about what contributes to a lasting marriage. Turns out, if you're considering taking the plunge, taking some time is, perhaps, a wise move. This is what the research seems to reveal:
![]() Now whether this is comforting or concerning, it’s important to note that the number of people surveyed is relatively small. What’s more, the research can only consider married people who are still married at the time of the survey – there’s no guarantee that they’ll be married 5,10,15 years beyond the survey’s collection date. What’s more, correlation doesn’t mean causation, i.e. just because there seems to be a correlation, it doesn't mean there actually is because there are all kinds of factors that are difficult to track and include in surveys such as these. How soon is too soon to propose, according to the experts? But what to the experts say? Jonathan Decker, the clinical director of Your Family Expert, and a licensed marriage and family therapist refers to a book called How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk by Dr. John Van Epp. Epp outlines five phases that are essential to go through before getting married:
These five steps happen almost simultaneously, but the priority you give them is important. As Decker puts it “don't touch somebody more than your level of commitment. Don't commit to somebody more than you can rely on them. Don't rely on somebody more than you can trust them and don't trust somebody more than you know them.” So with knowing being the most important phase, how long does it take to actually get to know somebody? Decker says according to research, “the bare minimum to actually know somebody is 90 days. For the first 90 days, people tend not to show you their angry side, their sad side, or their vulnerable side. They really want to impress you. They really want you to see the best of them. It's only after about 3 months of real contact and connection, that people tend to bring the walls down and show you who they really are.” So how long should you wait before proposing?Based on the research and experts, an absolute bare minimum of 90 days. A year at least would be even preferable, whilst 3 years plus at an optimum. That said, there’s only one thing that really matters… Love. And perhaps how much trust you have in your gut! So, as interesting as the information above is, only you – deep down – will know when it’s the right time to get married. That said, my hubby has a smart approach to many tough decisions and that is to consider how you would advise your best friend if they were in your situation. Would you advise they propose, or wait? via https://bridalmusings.com/191505/how-soon-is-too-soon-to-propose/ ![]() Whether you're recently engaged & just beginning to consider the engagement party; or a guest who is invited to one or the poor soul tasked with arranging the party itself…we have no doubt you have questions and lots of them! From establishing whether to have one at all & picking a date, through to deciding on gifts & decor – we'll tell you everything you need to know. So sit back, relax, and let us walk you through everything you need to know about the engagement party. What is an engagement party?A good first question! An engagement party is a party thrown to celebrate a couple's engagement. It can be as simple as a barbecue or as elaborate as a black-tie affair. It typically includes food, drinks, games or activities but it's entirely up to the planner (bearing in mind what the couple's tastes and preferences are!) Friends and family members attend to congratulate the couple and to celebrate the upcoming nuptials. Occasionally, the engagement party is a surprise engagement party! No not a surprise to the engaged couple(!) but to friends and family who aren't made aware of the news until the engagement party itself. Why have an engagement party? There are a few solid reasons to have an engagement party:
![]() Do you have to have an engagement party?“Absolutely not” says Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert. You don't have to have an engagement party if you don't want one. If the thought of planning a party and having all eyes on you fills you with dread then don't put yourself through that – planning a wedding can be stressful enough! Or why not reframe it as less of a party and more of a casual get-together by simply hosting a ‘Yay! We're Engaged' brunch or dinner, or don't host at all and head to a restaurant or have a relaxed picnic in your local park. Alternatively, just raise a glass to each other as you sit on the sofa watching TV and eating a takeaway. We all have our own ways of celebrating! When do you have an engagement party?Gottsman recommends having the engagement party three to six months after the engagement and we agree. This will give you enough time to plan a great party, but not so much time that you'll be too busy with other wedding planning tasks. Plus, it'll give your guests plenty of notice! Who throws the engagement party?According to Gottsman, in an ideal scenario, it's the parents of the bride, parents of the groom or friends that should arrange the engagement party. We say, you shouldn't feel uncomfortable throwing it yourselves as the couple. That way you can invite who you want and have the party exactly as you would want it. Who pays for the engagement party?Traditionally, the bride's parents would pay for the entire engagement party. But like everything else related to weddings, times have changed! Nowadays, it's much more common for couples to cover their own expenses or split the cost with their families. If you do decide to have your families help pay for the engagement party, make sure you set a budget beforehand so that no one gets stuck with an unexpectedly large bill at the end of the night. ![]() What to wear to the engagement party as the bride-to-be?There are no definitive rules when it comes to what to wear to your engagement party, but traditionally, brides-to-be have worn something fancy and/or white. If you're not sure what to wear, it's always a safe bet to go with a dress. How about donning a LWD (little white dress) or a white pant suit? Or really stand out from the crowd in a gold sequinned jumpsuit. And don't forget about accessories – a bright clutch or some statement earrings can really dress up an outfit. As for shoes, choose something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. What to wear to the engagement party as the groom-to-be?Same here, there are no clear rules on this and it can be tricky because it's not quite a wedding, but you don't want to show up in jeans either. Generally, you can't go wrong with a nice khaki or linen pant with a dress shirt and blazer. If it's a more casual party, you could also wear chinos with a polo or button-up shirt. Be sure to avoid anything too flashy or too formal. What to wear to the engagement party as a guest?Check the invite for any mentions of a dress code and consider the location. If it's a formal event, black tie is the standard. However, if it's more casual – like a BBQ or pool party – then shorts and a nice shirt or a sun dress would be appropriate. As for shoes, most people would go with dress shoes or sandals, but again it depends on the location. If you're not sure what to wear, always ask the host or hostess! They'll be happy to give you some advice. What do you do at an engagement party? The engaged couple is the focus of the party! Typically there's games and activities geared towards the couple. But essentially, it's just a way for the engaged couple to enjoy themselves with people they care about! Who do you invite to an engagement party? The best people to invite to the engagement party are the people who matter most to the engaged couple. Some couples choose to have a more intimate gathering with just their closest family and friends, while others prefer a larger celebration. It's entirely up to the couple. The golden rule is to make sure anyone invited to the engagement party is also going to be invited to the wedding. ![]() How do you decorate an engagement party? When planning an engagement party, it's important to consider the couple's style and taste. You may also want to choose a theme that reflects the couple's relationship or interests. Some ‘go to' ideas for engagement party decor include using balloons, flowers, and fairy lights to create pretty displays; hanging photos or a collage of the couple's favorite memories; or setting up a sweet treat or candy buffet. If you're looking for more inspiration, be sure to check out our 50 Outstanding Engagement Decorations post. How to plan an engagement party?Helpfully, we have a post dedicated to exactly this, but in a nutshell:
What is an appropriate gift for an engagement party?Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman notes that engagement party gifts are not mandatory, but generally an engagement party gift is “something small, a bottle of wine, a frame, a box of chocolates.” Some couples prepare lower priced items on their gift registry before-hand and include a link to it on the engagement party invitation or wedding website. Others include links to services like Honeyfund that let you collect cash rather than gifts. ![]() Hopefully that's clarified things for you. This can be confusing with lots of unwritten rules, so we're here to help clear things up! In this comprehensive guide to wedding financial etiquette, we'll break down who typically pays for what according to tradition and who pays for what in most modern weddings. We'll also offer advice on how to navigate these delicate waters if you're not sure who should be footing the bill. Read on for all you need to know about who pays for the wedding! Who traditionally pays for the wedding? It's important to say that traditions, like rules, are made to be broken… But traditionally, in the U.S., the bride's family traditionally pays for most of the wedding costs. This is because it's often considered their daughter “big day”, but also, in ye olde times, the bride was considered “property” for her parents to “give away” to the groom. Engagement parties and wedding ceremonies are often hosted by friends or loved ones of the bride's family, in order to help with costs. The reception venue, catering, reception music, and bride's attire and accessories are all typically paid for by the bride's family. Wedding planners and florists are common wedding expenses that the bride's family will pay for. The groom's family traditionally pays for the rehearsal dinner, honeymoon, and alcohol for the reception. However, as you'll read below, couples (57%) are increasingly paying for their weddings themselves. But how do most modern couples pay for their wedding in 2022?We're glad you asked. We did a deep dive into this thread from July 2022 and this is what we found. Out of 189 People, this is how couples paid for their wedding:
![]() My husband and I were very fortunate to have the bulk of our wedding costs paid by his parents, based on the research above we're clearly in the minority! How do you tactfully ask for help with wedding costs? It is important to ask for help with wedding costs early on, in order to manage expectations. One way to do this is by asking your parents or future in-laws if they would like to contribute. Try not to make assumptions about what they will contribute, and be respectful in your request.
How do you manage your wedding finances?Step 1: Have a Budget It is important to have a wedding budget when planning a wedding as this will help ensure the total expense is realistic and couples can align their priorities. Step 2: Consider who traditionally pays for the wedding and who can legitimately afford to pay. Consider traditions when it comes to who pays for what, but also bear in mind who in your family can realistically afford to help. Step 3: Understand that financial contributions to your wedding can come with strings It is important to understand that financial contributions to your wedding can come with strings attached. If someone offers to contribute financially to your wedding, they may expect something in return, such as a say in how the money is spent. It is important to be polite and respectful when asking for financial assistance for your wedding, and to never assume that someone will contribute. Step 4: Track your spending It is important to track your spending when planning a wedding in order to stay on budget and avoid going into debt. This will help you keep track of what you are spending on and where your money is going. It can also help you identify areas where you may be able to cut back or save money. Step 5: Cut costs where you can When planning a wedding, it is important to be mindful of costs and cut them where possible. Here are a few ideas:
What are the common mistakes couples make when it comes to paying for their wedding?1. Not asking each parent if they want to contribute financially It is important to ask each parent if they want to contribute financially to the wedding rather than assume they will or won't. 2. Not considering who traditionally pays for a wedding but also who can realistically afford to pay Hate to repeat this but whilst it's valid to consider who traditionally pays for weddings, it's perhaps more important to consider who can realistically afford to contribute. 3. Not budgeting for the wedding If a couple does not budget for their wedding, they may find themselves feeling overwhelmed by the cost. They may also end up spending more than they originally planned. Without a budget, couples have less control over the type of wedding they have. 4. Not being grateful for their circumstances Whether you're paying for the wedding yourselves or have help from your parents, take a second to appreciate how fortunate you are to be able to have the a celebration in the first place. 6. Not asking for help when they need it It is important to ask for help when planning a wedding so that you are clear about what you need and do not end up spending more than you can afford. 7. Not communicating with each other about the wedding Couples need to communicate about who will pay for what aspects of their wedding early on in their relationship. This is because financial planning for a wedding can be complex. By discussing costs early on, couples can make sure they are both on the same page and budget for their wedding accordingly. via https://bridalmusings.com/190717/who-pays-for-the-wedding-costs/ |
